"I'll Be Home For Christmas"

"I'll Be Home For Christmas" was written in honor of service members who were overseas during World War II and longed to be home for the holidays. It came out as families were about to enter their second holiday season separated by war and overcast with yearning, sadness, and steadfast commitment.

Diane Christie (cousin to 2nd. Lt. Thomas V. Kelly, Jr., (bombardier on Heaven Can Wait), recalls her mother could no longer listen to the song.

"It was just too painful," Diane said.

In the last few years, Diane and the families of the entire Heaven Can Wait crew have had much to celebrate.

Project Recover located Heaven Can Wait in October 2017. Relatives of the crew have gathered for a Heaven Can Wait Family Reunion. Families have reconnected, and the DPAA is exploring the plausibility of a recovery mission.

Now when Diane hears the song, she feels her mom's sadness - and also love, hope, gratitude, and joy for so many happy memories.

This Christmas we remember all of our service members and their families. It is our honor and commitment to help families, communities, and our Nation feel the joy, love, hope, and gratitude that happens when our MIAs come home for Christmas at last.
