Dear
The other day we shared a blog post on Finding the Arnett B-24. The post included
two videos.
One video, which we share with solemn remembrance of the service members on board, was of B-24 under fire and crashing.
As many of you no doubt noticed, the
B-24 in the video is not the Arnett B-24. The sequence of events, however,
is similar to what happened to the Arnett B-24.The video shows a B-24 hit by anti-aircraft fire followed by the left wing folding and breaking off. The plane then spiraled into a crash.
The B-24 in the video was piloted by 2nd Lt. Glen R. Custer. The Custer B-24 was shot down on May 4, 1945, on a bombing mission over Koror, Palau. Pat Scannon identified the wing wreckage about one mile from the crash site in 1994.
Eleven service members were lost with the
Custer B-24; ten with the plane and one by enemy forces after parachuting out. A recovery mission was conducted after the war,
and the case is closed.

PS Please bear with us! We'll be chattier than usual in the coming weeks. We are dusting off archives and some stories that never grow old are resurfacing. Plus we have an exciting new partnership to share and an awesome sneak peek (with more videos) at the innovative science behind the search for our MIAs.
